The Beauty of Process

Spring is coming and with it the reminder that there is a process to everything we do. With that in mind I thought I’d show some of the process of making a pattern at Mayhen Press, along with a little freebie from me to you at the end of this post!

Each pattern starts with lots of thinking and thumbnail sketches. Once I decide the direction that I want to take with the pattern I begin drawing the motifs that I want to use. I love using linocut elements in my work so, often, making motifs is a blend of drawing and carving!

When I’ve finished all the parts and pieces that I’m going to use to make up my new pattern, I scan them into my computer and get to work with all the puzzle pieces of size, form, colors and textures. Sometimes striking just the right balance with all of these things takes a long time!
Once I’ve finally got everything where I’m happy with it then I’ll use it to create the products that you see in the Mayhen Press shop. I’ve also used some of the motifs from the crocus pattern I’ve been showing you to make a free calendar for you to download and enjoy this month!

I hope you lean into and enjoy the process of nature coming to life this spring and feel a beautiful process at work in your own life!
